Tips for Choosing Basic Bedding
The right bedding is the foundation to your sleeping comfort. Important factors to consider in choosing essential basic bedding pieces include your bed's size, the materials you desire and the coordinated or unique style you're after for your space. Another factor to think about is how warm or cool you like your bed to feel during different times of the year. For cold weather, consider down or down-alternative comforters. For warm weather, try a cotton, polyester or silk blanket. You can use the same sheets year-round, but some people prefer flannel for the winter and a lighter weave like percale for the summer.
Bed Pillows
For ultimate comfort, consider your preferred sleeping position. Choose a thicker, firmer pillow that supports your neck if you're a side sleeper, or enjoy the full-body support of a body pillow. Find a medium thick pillow if you sleep on your back, but a contoured pillow to support your back and neck, such as a cervical role or neck roll, may be just right for a good night's sleep. A soft, flat pillow is ideal if you sleep on your stomach. In addition, consider the types of fillings you can choose:
- Memory foam pillows and gel bead-infused memory foam reduce pressure points to provide maximum comfort
- Down synthetic or alternative fills feel like the real thing but they are easy to re-fluff, hypoallergenic and supportive for side and back sleepers
- Down pillows last long, are soft and resilient and do not have quills that poke your head like feather pillows may have
- Latex pillows are typically on the firm side, super resilient and manufactured for long-term wear, but are not machine washable and should be protected with a waterproof case
- Polyester, polyester gel, microfiber and hypoallergenic polyester fiber are all ideal for people prone to allergies and can be machine washed
Bed Sheets
Bed sheets come in all bed sizes and in materials such as cotton, cotton blends, microfiber, polyester, satin, poly blends and microfibers, jersey and flannel. To keep sheets on the bed, consider gripper corner straps. More important for comfort, decide which thread count is right for you. In general, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheet, but there are exceptions to this rule. If you prefer the softest sheets, look for high-quality fibers, like Egyptian cotton, pima and supima because these are longer fibers that won't pill. Rule of thumb: buy above a 200-thread count and under 800-thread count for comfort and opt for percale or sateen weaves for smooth sheets. Know your bed sizes for best results, here's a handy list of mattress measurements:
- Twin mattresses measure 39 inches by 74 inches
- Twin-XL mattresses measure 39 inches by 80 inches
- Full mattresses measure 54 inches by 74 inches
- Queen mattresses measure 60 inches by 80 inches
- King mattresses measure 76 inches by 80 inches
- California King mattresses measure 72 inches by 84 inches
Comforters, duvet covers, blankets and Throws
Topping your bed is half the fun when you have so many color and style options. Comforters offer cushioned comfort, traditional bedspreads bring a more tailored look to your bed, duvet covers are versatile covers in which you can insert a duvet or even a comforter, and quilts, blankets and throws top off the bed. Comforters come in various fills:
- Cotton and wool filled comforters are good for year-round comfort
- Down filled comforters offer best insulation and luxurious feel but are on the higher end of the prices
- Down alternative comforters offer synthetic fills that mimic lofty down clusters, often using micro gel fibers or beads for added comfort
- Polyester filled comforters are lightweight, easy to maintain, typically least expensive and good for year-round use
Bed skirts and Dust Ruffles
To finish off your bed, add a bed skirt or dust ruffle, especially helpful if you're trying to hide in a neat way what's stored under your bed. Skirts and ruffles come in all sizes and lengths and are meant to hide the dust bunnies under your bed or provide a finished look to your bedroom decor. Some skirts and ruffles need to be placed between the mattress and box spring and others can be wrapped around the outside of the box spring. The standard length drop of a bed skirt or ruffle is between 14 inches and 16 inches, and longer drops are available for tall beds. Choose your style to match your look.
- Tailored bed skirts are ideal for adult rooms and are often pleated with formal and crisp box pleats or more casual inverted box pleats where folds of fabric face towards each other
- Ruching is a technique of gathering small pleats of fabric tightly together, which puckers the skirt for a very casual look
- Ruffled skirts are more feminine and come in single or tiered multiple ruffles which are perfect for a young girl's room
- Trimmed bed skirts have crocheted, scalloped or other decorative edgings
Mattress Pads and Toppers
Pads and toppers protect your mattress and can make them more comfortable depending on what you choose. The difference is that a mattress pad typically zips or slips with an elastic over a mattress to protect it, and a topper can be used in addition to a pad, and it is a cushioned top only. And, you can always cover a topper to protect it, too. Pads and toppers come in all mattress sizes to fit your bed. Knowing the different topper materials will help you choose the right option for ultimate sleeping comfort.
- Foam toppers: come in various thicknesses, and gel-infused memory foam toppers have cooling gel embedded to absorb your body heat and keep you cool
- Feather and down toppers: plush and warm, but allergy sufferers may want to opt for other materials
- Polyfiber toppers: hypoallergenic and can be easily re-fluffed and machine washed to retain its luxurious thickness
- Wool and cotton toppers offer natural fibers that keep you warm and cool when necessary, resistant to mold and dust
